UNIT 9 BLOG

                  I.                  Introduction:
It is important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically because in order to be an effective guide you will need to have the necessary skills. Meditation for me would be the area that I believe would need the most development. It is an area that I am working on and continue to work on as I grow.

                II.                  Assessment:
In my areas of assessment in a range of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest I would rate my assessment as follows: Spiritual is 8; Physical 6 and Psychologically is 7. I believe there is always room for improvement in all areas of my life. Due to scheduling, I neglect giving myself more time to be physical. Therefore, this area of my life requires more work.

              III.                  My Goal Development:
List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area, Physical, Psychological (mental health) and Spiritual.

Physical – Devote at least ½ hour three times per week to cardio, and 1 hour three times per week to yoga.

Psychological – Take more time out to utilize stress relieving techniques and relax. Concentrate on meditation until I have mastered it.

Spiritual – Become more involved in church activities and ministries and dedicate more time to read and understand the Bible.

IV.                  My Practices for personal health:
Physical – Prepare a schedule and routine and stick to it. Don’t use excuses to deter from the plan.

Psychological – Stop, think about how I will react before reacting. Set times throughout the day to implement techniques to relieve stress. Practice meditation until I perfect it.

Spiritual – Join other ministries in the church. Set time aside each day to reflect and/or medicate.

                V.                  Commitment:
In assessing my progress or lack of progress over a six month period, I can maintain a log and/or a journal to document my daily accomplishments or non-accomplishments. I could also enlist friends and family to hold me accountable. I can re-evaluate myself monthly to review my progress or lack of progress.

FINAL BLOG

1.     I had issues with unit 3 blog so I was not able to post. But as today on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate myself 9 for psychological. I am pretty grounded and do not have any major issues mentally. Except the few times my children “get on my nerves” and I want to get rid of them. J Other than that I’m fine in that department. But I can always improve. 7 for physical because I am a work in progress with the physical. However, since taking this class I have become more aware and am more dedicated to my yoga. Where I was going once a week, I am now going two to three times per week working my way to 5 times per week. Spiritual well-being I rate myself a 9 I am pretty spiritually connected, I am active in my church and volunteer a lot, and hold a leadership position in my church, however there is always room for improvement. I would love to read the Bible more and with understanding.

2.     I have made progress. I do one-half hour of cardio and attend yoga classes more than once per week. I attend two to three times per week. I have begun to pray more. I am still working on reading the Bible with clarity.

3.     Yes. I have set aside certain days to go to yoga and set aside a certain amount of time to do cardio before my yoga class.

4.     This class has been very rewarding. It has helped me to understand how important all aspects of well-being is. We usually think of just the physical at first not realizing the other aspects of well-being, spiritual and mental. If we are not healthy in all areas of our life we are not 100% healthy. This class has helped me to understand why being healthy in all areas are important. The hardest part of the class was some of the meditation exercises. I have been telling others the importance of well-being in all areas of our life.

UNIT 8 BLOG

I think the best practices meditation and subtle mind. During the practices I found that I was able to perform these two better than all the others. Both involve the process of breathing. Breathing is something we do every day all day. It is just a matter of learning how to breathe during meditation and the subtle mind exercise. As the breathing become more rhythmic your mind will start to follow. As I follow my breathing I am able to let go and let my mind take in the calming effects of the breath. It is easier to use the breath as a focal point than a beach, a light or some other object or person.

To improve my mental fitness I can start to learn to meditate daily so that I can become a master before I attempt to pass along my skills to someone else. I can take the time to stop and listen to my inner self. Throughout the day go for a walk and breathe to clear my mind and relax. Pay attention and be aware of the needs of my body (spiritual, mental, physical and psychological).

Integral Assessment

The universal loving kindness process consisted of closing the eyes for one to two minutes listen to the quiet of the mind and body then repeating several phrases for 10 minutes. Doing this practice can shift the focus from yourself to someone universal loving-kindness.

The integral assessment process consisted of the same process of closing the eyes, sit still and listen to your mind and body. Once quiet, ask yourself several questions that focuses on several aspects of your life. This exercise will help you determine what area or areas of your life you need the most work.

My area for growth and development is spiritual growth. The reason is my grandmother was a very spiritual woman and she seemed to always be at ease about everything and never had any worries. She always said it was because she read her bible every day, prayed and was kind to all people. I always admired her and would love to have that same peace and calm aura she had. She was loved by everyone she never would say bad things about people she would always say she is going to pray for them.

In achieving this I can speak with my pastor or another elder in the church, read the Bible, pray more, meditate, exercise and perform destressing activities throughout the day.

Subtle Mind

The Subtle mind exercise was a lot easier than the Loving Kindness exercise. Especially when we I had to take in the pain of a loved one and give back no pain. That was pretty had to do. I also lost concentration in the Loving Kindness exercise. I was able to relax more and my mind did not drift. I felt light and at one point I could even feel and see the water and waves. I was very calm and quiet during the Subtle mind exercise. I am sure it would have been a lot better if I had not been interrupted by my grandson towards the end.

Spiritual and mental wellness can help you develop physical wellness.  If you are in a good place in your spirit and mind then you will be able to complete a physical task easier. For example, if you are going to exercise and your mind and spirit is not in it, you will not complete the task of exercising where it will be effective. There are times when this happens to me. If I am not prepared to exercise I will not get a good work out. When I am in this place I take a yoga class to bring me back into my good spirit and a good mental place.

Loving Kindness

1.     In the beginning it was easy. It also got a little overwhelming with the section about taking pain of your loved one. Towards the end my mind started drifting thinking about things I had to do. I think that with time and continuing to practice I could concentrate and get it. I would recommend it to someone else. It may be easier for them than for me. It does not hurt to try.

2.     Mental workouts are used to clear your mind, calm your spirit and help you to become more focused. Research has proven that mental workouts contribute to faster healing from illnesses, relieve stress and assist with a healthier well-being. To foster my psychological well-being I can take the time practice meditation, eat healthy, exercise and just stop and listen to my inner self. One think I currently do is praying every morning before starting my day is beneficial. I guess this is a form of meditation.

Unit 3 Blog

1.     that I don’t want to I work full time, go to school full time, babysit my grandsons at night and on the weekend for their mother to work. I would love to devote more time to my physical well-being. I rate my spiritual well-being a five because I don’t devote as much of my time to it as I should for the same reasons mentioned above. I rate my psychological well-being an eight. I do take time to distress and sit quietly. I do yoga at least once per week and I am in control of my feelings and mental abilities. I don’t let things bother me I “let go and let God.”

2.     I can make more time to work out more even if I have to do it at home in between homework and babysitting. I can at least read the Bible or other spiritual readings. I can continue keep myself distressed.

3.     Do simple movements at home in between homework and babysitting or make a schedule that would include exercising more. Read more inspirational or spiritual materials. Listen to soothing, relaxing music. Eat healthier.

4.     The tape was very relaxing. I even fell asleep about midway. However, once I awaken from my nap my mind kept drifting and I wasn’t able to concentrate as I was in the beginning. Close to the end I was able to get back in sync until the music ended. I did not like the man’s voice.
